AER and ACCC enforce new Electricity Retail Code rules for all retailers starting 1 July 2026.

Australia's energy retailers woke up to a different rulebook on 1 July 2026. The Australian Energy Regulator and the ACCC jointly released a bulletin that made months of warnings official: updated Electricity Retail Code obligations now carry full legal weight, and every retailer in the country falls under them.

The timing wasn't a surprise. Regulators flagged these enforcement priorities back in December 2025, giving companies a runway to prepare. That runway just ended.

What changes in practice? Retailers must now align their internal processes, customer communications, and contracts with the National Energy Customer Framework. Miss a step, and the consequences come from two of the country's most assertive regulators acting together rather than in isolation.

For an industry accustomed to gradual tightening, this feels like a harder pivot. AER's compliance framework exists, in its own words, to make sure "those selling or supplying energy are following the obligations as set out in the National Energy Customer Framework." There's little room left for interpretation.

Households stand to gain the most. Clearer billing. Fairer contract terms. Service standards that regulators can actually hold retailers to. In a market where energy costs have squeezed budgets for years, that shift matters more than the bureaucratic language suggests.

Retailers now face a choice. Those investing early in compliance infrastructure will likely find themselves better positioned as the energy transition accelerates through the rest of 2026. Companies that stall, however, are stacking risk on risk, especially with two regulators now moving in lockstep rather than working separately.

The message from Canberra is blunt: adapt now, or answer for it later.
