Australia's gas network is going digital, and the scale of the push is hard to ignore. Origin Energy and Landis+Gyr kicked off a major smart metering deployment on June 4, 2026, one that will retrofit existing gas assets with IoT modules capable of remote readings and near real-time data across homes and businesses nationwide.

Eighteen months is the timeline. Rather than tearing out existing hardware, Landis+Gyr will layer its communications technology and data management platform directly onto Origin's current infrastructure. Keeping the original meters in place limits disruption and shaves time off the path to full digitalisation.

David Maclean, Landis+Gyr's Senior Vice President APAC, said the solution "provides utilities with one of the fastest pathways to digitalisation, enabling improved customer service outcomes, safer installation practices and greater operational efficiencies."

The numbers behind this deal give it real weight. Around two million Landis+Gyr gas meters are already installed across Australia. A successful rollout could open the door to deploying upgraded capabilities across that entire base, a shift that would change how gas consumption data is captured and acted on at scale. Consumers could see faster billing, fewer manual site visits, and more reliable service as a result.

Gas has historically lagged well behind electricity in smart metering adoption, making this partnership a notable signal for the broader sector. Momentum built here could push industry-wide standards forward and attract further investment in network modernisation.

Both companies are framing this as a replicable model, a blueprint for utilities looking to upgrade aging infrastructure without starting from scratch. The rest of the industry is paying attention.
